NGC Gardening School Course I

Helping members become accomplished horticulturists.

The NGC Gardening Study Courses are designed to provide educational information to those especially interested in gardening, horticulture and related subjects. Courses cover all aspects of growing, from understanding soil structure to pruning techniques, plant identification, etc. Topics include basic botany, soils, growing annuals, perennials, trees and shrubs, fruits and vegetables, lawns, pests and diseases of plants, plant classification, and selected subjects of local interest. Held at the Garden Club of DeLand

Speaker: Jim Norman, Master Gardener 

UF/IFAS Extension Center since 2011 

Florida resident since 1982, when he started raising tropical fish; primarily African cichlids part time. Imported salt and freshwater fish from the Far East and raised cichlids until 2004. Taught agriculture from 2004-2010, now retired and enjoying being a Master Gardener since 2011.

Site preparation and selection of grass/plants B. Maintenance of site C. Problem solving GROWING FRUIT A. Choice of varieties B. When and how to plant C. Training and pruning D. Environmental factors E. Problem solving and solutions GROWING VEGETABLES A. Choice of varieties (organic, non-GMO, nonorganic) B. When and how to plant C. Crop rotation and inter-planting D. Pest control E. Problems and solutions SUPPLEMENTAL SUBJECT Study of specific local plant group.

Open to Everyone! Gardening School courses are open to everyone, regardless of National Garden Club, Inc. membership. Each of the 4 courses has an optional exam. NGC members wishing to apply to be NGC Gardening Consultants must take all four courses and pass each exam. Non-members fulfilling the above requirements may apply to be Consultants upon joining an NGC affiliated club within one calendar year of the completion date of the 4th course.
